Several Veteran-Related Bills Pass During Legislative Session

Looking back at the short legislative session with five working days left, lawmakers have managed to approve a handful of bills aimed at helping veterans.  LB-588 gives a hiring preference to veterans and spouses of disabled veterans who apply for jobs with the state or a local government.  LB-740 allows veterans and their families to qualify for in-state tuition if they have left active duty within the last two years, as long as they've established residency and registered to vote.  LB-5 allows veterans to exempt part of their military retirement pay if they choose to live in Nebraska.  LB-087 gives a full homestead exemption to veterans who are receiving payments for a 100 percent, service-connected disability.
