Fatal Crash Near Elmwood Still Under Investigation

ELMWOOD, Neb. -- Autopsy results may provide clues as to why a Syracuse man was driving erattically Tuesday night, crossing the center line of Highway 34 near Elmwood and slamming his pickup head-on into a Weeping Water ambulance. Investigators say 24-year-old William Whitlatch, Jr. was killed. So was the ambulance driver, 51-year-old Robert Hanes, Sr. His 30 year old daughter, Melissa Hanes, also an EMT in the ambulance, was last listed in "fair" condition following surgery at Bryan West Campus in Lincoln.
