LYONS, Neb. -- The first Democrat has announced his commitment to run for governor. Former University of Nebraska Regent Chuck Hassebrook will announce Tuesday he's jumping into the 2014 race. Hassebrook now serves as director of the Center for Rural Affairs. Governor Heineman is no eligible to seek re-election because of term limits. The 58-year-old says he plans to appeal to rural residents with a focus on early childhood education, job training programs and renewable energy.
